Anambra commits N1 billion to erosion projects

To prevent flooding and make life more meaningful for the people, the Anambra State Government has increased its counterpart fund to about N1billion for execution of projects under the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management project (NEWMAP).

Project Coordinator, NEWMAP, Mr. Michael Ivenso, who disclosed this in Awka, said Governor Willie Obiano-led administration reached the N1billion counterpart fund benchmark following an additional payment of N500 million for the actualization of the project.

The project coordinator said, the governor has recorded much achievements in the area of erosion control projects, climate change mitigation and environmental sustainability, which is a demonstration of its administrations’ commitment in making the state environmentally friendly.

He said NEWMAP is supporting the one million tree planting campaign in collaboration with the Anambra State Ministry of Agriculture and the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority to develop seedlings that will be used to replace the depleting forest reserves in the state.

According to him, the afforestation programme is geared towards mitigating the consequences of felling trees, improving urban development, and reclaiming erosion prone land areas in the state.

Meanwhile, Governor Obiano has urged the Federal government to declare a state of emergency in Anambra following the consistent threat posed by erosion menace to the state.

He stressed that, “there are 782 erosion sites in the state and each of them causing serious problem to the communities where they are located”.
