Since his assumption as the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Maduaburochukwu Obiano, Odogwu Omambala, has shown his unqualified support and love for the media in all its ramifications.
For instance, he has been able to fix the technical challenges facing the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) with the construction of state-of-the-art ABS Radio/TV digital complex. The complex, with the best equipment for any state media outfit in Nigeria, was commissioned recently.
Today, the state broadcasting outfit studio complex has given the state a befitting facelift, making it one of the best stations in the Sub-Sahara Africa.
The same goes for the Anambra Newspapers and Printing Corporation, the publishers of the National Light Newspapers, which has blossomed from its ruins and despondency of the past to a more formidable state newspaper outfit in Nigeria. It can now stand tall and shrug its shoulders among the comity of newspapers in the country following the new welfare packages and the recent approval of payment of age-old pension and gratuity to its retirees.
This renewed welfare packages for both staff of the Anambra Broadcasting Service and National Light Newspapers, the first of its kind since the creation of Anambra State, has placed Governor Obiano on a higher pedestal among others.
Unlike many governors who owed their state workforce several months of arrears of salary, Governor Obiano, despite the dwindling allocation from the federal government and the economic predicament facing many governments in Nigeria, has consistently been paying the Anambra state civil servants salary as and when due.
It is, therefore, not surprising that the Governor has received an avalanche of media awards for his meteoric achievements in that sector. For example, in 2015, Chief Obiano bagged the Ziks Award for Good Governance, and that same year, he was also the winner of Sun Governor of the year.
Other awards followed simultaneously. He was winner, Silver Bird Man of the year 2015; winner, Vanguard Best Governor of the year; New Telegraph Outstanding Performance Award 2016 and Daily Times Heroe Award. He was also the African Development Bank (ADB) Best Governor in Agriculture. Early this month, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Abuja branch, conferred on the governor another meritorious award for good governance, while teachers in Nigeria honoured him as the Most Teacher Friendly Governor in Nigeria.
Governor Obiano has done what many could not do. Under his administration, the popular Ugu Anambra, Onugbu Anambra and Anambra Rice, have taken the centre stage in the international market.
It is Governor Willie Obiano who drastically reduced taxation for low income earners in parks, markets and streets, as well as motorcyclists and tricycles. All the one hundred eighty-one communities in the state cannot easily forget the forty million naira choose your project initiative by the Obiano administration for community development.
Governor Willie Obiano has made Anambra first choice investment destination, and hub for industrialization, having attracted investors from all the four corners of the globe, with investments worth over five billion dollars into the state. He has placed Anambra on the History of good governance and restored the confidence of investors to the state. Head or tail, Governor Obiano deserves another chieftaincy titled as Ome Okachie, in view of all his achievements.
