Tekno, one of the most sensational artistes on the Nigerian music scene will perform live in the Smithcity of Awka on Saturday March 17, 2018. And this is official. You can take it to the bank!
The enigmatic crossover artist who has never performed in South East Nigeria since he assumed the status of an adored figure in contemporary Nigerian music will have his first home-coming when he performs along Flavour at the second term inauguration of Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State.
The Ebonyi State born singer will be hitting the stage with Anambra born Flavour in a memorable performance that has been scripted to bring verve and colour to Governor Obiano’s date with history on March 17.
The two superstars are some of the brightest lights of Nigeria’s music industry with a huge fan base across Africa and beyond.
Speaking about the decision to feature the two icons in the inauguration ceremony, Mr Uzu Okagbue, the Chief of Protocol to Governor Obiano who brokered the arrangement, explained that the occasion demands the making of special memories which would serve as reminders of the weight of history the inauguration carries.
Said he: “Flavour and Tekno are two proud sons of Igbo land who have represented us well in the entertainment world in the past few years. Their music is special. They have touched us all with the depth of their music over time. Their performance in Awka on the 17th will go down as one of the highlights of that historic day.”
According to him, Governor Obiano had always reached out to the performing arts community. “Almost one year ago, we brought all the pop stars of the70s together for a performance in Awka that was aptly tagged a ‘Night of Nostalgia.’ It was the first time that most of those musicians would perform to a live audience after leaving the stage shortly after the Biafran War. So, this is in line with the hand of friendship Governor Obiano has always extended to our cultural ambassadors,” he further explained.
Political observers in Awka are already comparing the planned performance of Flavour and Tekno at Obiano’s inauguration to the familiar tradition of involving creative artistes to establish the tone of the dialogue between the leader and his followers in contemporary governance.
Throwing more light on the scenario, Awka based public affairs analyst, Obiora Aghadinuno recalled that during the second term inauguration of former US President Bill Clinton, celebrated poet, Maya Angelou was invited to deliver an Inaugural Poem.
“Maya Angelou delivered a critically acclaimed poem titled ‘On the Pulse of the Morning’ which reverberated across the world and helped former President Clinton ease smoothly into his second term in office on the pulse of that poem,” Aghadinuno recalled, emphasizing that in inviting celebrated artistes to his inauguration, Obiano is showing that he is a man of the world.
While Flavour has often played in Awka in the front of thousands of home fans who adore him and never seem to have enough of him, Tekno has never played in the East. Nor has he played much across Nigeria.
Indeed, since he took the music scene by storm on June 8, 2015 with the unstoppable single titled “Duro,” Tekno has demonstrated a clear mastery of his craft that has stunned his fans with hit after hit songs that topped the charts across Africa. His sublime touch on modern Nigerian music has turned him into one of the most sought after performing artistes on the continent as he is more often to be seen playing at gigs across Africa and in the US than at home in Nigeria.
In bringing him to Awka therefore, Governor Obiano has blazed the trail in reaching out to some of the best talents from the South East and giving them a sense of belonging.
